Short answer: Snaking punches a hole through a clog and is fine for a one-time blockage. [Hydro jetting](https://legacyplumbingmo.com/facility-services/hydro-jetting) scours the full pipe wall with high-pressure water, removing grease, scale, sludge and roots so the line flows at full diameter again. For [restaurants](https://legacyplumbingmo.com/industries/restaurants-food-service) , kitchens, multi-tenant buildings and any line that keeps backing up, jetting is usually the better long-term fix.

## How each method works

Drain snaking (cabling): a rotating cable with a cutting head is fed into the line to break through the obstruction. It restores some flow quickly but leaves buildup on the pipe walls.

Hydro jetting: a specialized nozzle sprays water at high pressure, with rear-facing jets that pull the hose forward while cleaning the full circumference of the pipe. Debris is flushed downstream.

## When hydro jetting is the right call

- Grease-heavy lines (restaurants, cafeterias, food service, grocery)
- Recurring backups — the same line clogs every few weeks or months
- Scale and sludge in older cast iron and long horizontal runs
- Root intrusion — root-cutting nozzles clear roots that cabling only trims
- Before a camera inspection or lining — clean walls give a true picture of condition
- Preventive maintenance on high-use lines

## When snaking may be enough

- A single, isolated clog in a fixture branch
- Lines known to be fragile or badly deteriorated, where a camera inspection should come first

## Is hydro jetting safe for old pipes?

For most commercial drain lines, yes — when trained technicians match pressure and nozzle to the pipe material and condition. If a line is cracked, offset or collapsed, a camera inspection first tells you whether to jet, repair or replace.

## How often should commercial lines be jetted?

- High-grease kitchen lines: often every 3–6 months
- Multi-tenant and office buildings: often annually for main lines
- Problem lines: based on camera findings and backup history

A maintenance schedule built around your building costs less than repeated service calls and tenant disruptions.

## What to expect on a jetting visit

- 1) Identify the problem line and best access point (cleanout)
- 2) Camera inspection when needed
- 3) Jet with the right nozzle and pressure
- 4) Verify flow and re-inspect if needed
- 5) Report findings and recommended maintenance interval

## Frequently asked questions

### Does hydro jetting fix a broken pipe?

No. Jetting cleans pipes; it does not repair cracks, offsets or collapses. A camera inspection identifies those so they can be repaired.

### Will jetting disrupt my tenants or customers?

Work can usually be scheduled before or after business hours, and most lines are back in service the same visit.

### Can hydro jetting clear grease interceptor lines?

Yes. Jetting the lines to and from interceptors is a common part of food-service maintenance.
